John Oosting

Before studying at the Minerva Academy of Art in Groningen, John Oosting worked as a screen printer in the graphic arts industry. At the academy, he initially set aside his background in graphic design and experimented with various other creative disciplines. In his second year, however, John returned to screen printing. Since it had once been his profession, he felt right at home and quickly began working on new prints. Since then, screen printing has been an integral part of John’s artistic practice. John draws his inspiration from the visual interpretation of techno. Abstraction, geometric and graphic forms, clear contrasts, and repetition are key elements. Every aspect has its counterpart in electronic dance music. John therefore refers to his work as “Visual Technology.” He also enjoys exploring the futuristic aspect of the music and its paradoxical relationship to nostalgia. This is also why John often names his works after old techno records: his latest print series, for example, is titled “Der Klang der Familie,” a very early techno track released in 1992.
